SPACEBOP JAZZ QUINTET [France] – OFF
2 June, at 6.30pm | Oficinas do Convento [Convento de S. Francisco]
CE | All ages
The Spacebop Quintet is on a quest to breach the Space-Time Continuum and defeat the Supreme Algorithm, destroying his armies of ruthless robots from the future!
Five improvisers, brought together around liberating themes, invoke the spirits of the ‘New Thing’ to deliver interactive music, which is smooth or barbaric, and, at times, lyrical, but always on the edge. These five talented jazzmen dig the groove between paying tribute to jazz heroes such as Ornette Coleman, Paul Motian, Jackie McLean, Eric Dolphy, free improvisations and their own compositions. Their music must be felt, raw and uncompromising!

Benoit Crauste’s work is based on intense research on the acoustic spectrum of the saxophone and traditional expression, from Free-Jazz, African music and sounds of nature. He studied at the American School of Modern Music and at Edim, under Peter Giron, Eric Schultz and Jean Michel Couchet. He studied the saxophone with Tony Malaby, Will Vinson and Baptiste Herbin, among others. Influenced by Duke Ellington, he debuted as leading alto sax in Big Bands and played with Peter Perfido in the Maryam Quintet. Years later, his experience allowed him to discover a shared expression between Jazz and Afrobeat. A verbose musician, Benoit has shared the stage with legends of the Parisian African scene such as Hilaire Panda, Nazaire Bello, Tony Allen, Oghene Kologbo and with jazz musicians such as David Murray, Eric Schultz, Boris Blanchet and Yoram Rosilio.
