MERLIN PUPPET THEATRE [Germany/Greece]

‘Clown’s Houses’

23 May, at 9.30pm | Cine-Teatro Curvo Semedo

CE | Ages 15 and over

Duration | 65 min.

One building, five apartments and six main characters. Comical-tragical personalities, who lead a miserable life they aren’t afraid to lose but are afraid to live.
The spectator watches them live their conventional lives in a dark, claustrophobic setting, with their fears, obsessions and loneliness. ‘Merlin’ dramatises and demonises their obsessions until they finally punish and liberate them in the most violent manner.
‘Merlin’ doesn’t attempt to conduct an existential analysis through its work. The troupe dramatises the modern way of living in its current form. The loneliness of modern man is displayed through the dark rooms of ‘Clown’s Houses’; prison-like houses, where people are trapped into their routines and habits, distant from their dreams.

The Merlin Puppet Theatre was founded in Ilion, Athens, Greece, in 1995. Its founders, Dimitris Stamou and Demy Papada, started their career creating masks and puppets for the theatre. In 2004, they started performing with their own puppet theatre. Since then, they have created stories for a mainly younger audience, and they’ve toured Greece with hundreds of performances, including workshops on puppet creation and play.
They’ve created puppets and props for other performers and artists such as Tiger Lillies and Dirty Granny Tales and Opera Chaotique.
In November 2011, Merlin moved to Berlin. In April 2012, “Clown’s Houses” premiered in Berlin and has since been presented at international festivals and theatres in over 32 countries around the world.
The Merlin Puppet Theatre troupe lives and works in Berlin.
