‘Era uma Vez –Teatro de Marionetas’
José Carlos Alegria was born in Évora in 1953. Under the watchful eye of Mário Barradas and Luis Varela, he completed his acting classes at the Évora Cultural Centre (1977/1979). He worked as an actor at the Évora Cultural Centre, Teatro da Rainha and at the Évora Drama Centre. For six years, José Carlos Alegria was one of the performers who brought the Santo Aleixo Puppets to life. In 1991, he opened his own puppet theatre – ERA UMA VEZ – TEATRO DE MARIONETAS. At the turn of the millennium, his son, Carlos Miguel Meira Alegria, started working with him and his daughter, Ana Margarida Meira Alegria, joined them in 2006. Set designers Vasco Fernando, António Canelas, Iria Kovacs and Amândio Anastácio made almost all the puppets. His company has performed in Portugal, Spain, Andorra, France, Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and São Tomé and Príncipe.
